Our first place winner’s entry: Alexa Pierce-Matlack. “I was honored by my high school (Wilmington Friends School) last week during Lab Week to come speak to some current high school young women about STEM. I talked about how I got to where I am today and what made me want to be involved in health care. I also talked about the lab work I do in Microbiology and how it helps many decisions in the hospital setting. I was able to talk about the local health fairs that UD has partnered with a city church to be able to ‘provide the face’ and offer cholesterol and glucose screening to people who might not be able to get screened normally. I also was able to talk about ASCLS as a whole and my “Voices Under 40” award from last year. These young women truly inspired me with how much they wanted to learn about my career so far and them wanting to go into science fields in the future.”

Thank you so much to Alexa and our other winners for taking the initiative to step out of the lab and help promote the profession!

All winners will be contacted by email to confirm shipping addresses and your prizes will be sent out shortly.

Sincerely,
